Red-crowned Parrots

16 Jan

Red-crowned Parrots can be found in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.  They breed here.  They can be found at various locations.  Parrots gather in large groups late in the afternoon, before sundown.  They are found in northern Mexico, particularly along the Rio Grande River., and also in Texas in the lower Rio Grande Valley.

The Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife planned a census count of these parrots for yesterday, Friday, January 15, 2015.  Teams were organized in Harlingen, Weslaco, McAllen and Pharr to survey known roost sites.

Three others and I were asked to survey a stand of palm trees near the Valley Vista Mall in Harlingen.  Sadly, our group did not find any parrots.  We did see a group of 10 Green Parakeets.  But parakeets were not our goal.

i don’t have the results yet.  But it is estimated that in Harlingen alone, there are approximately, 300 Red-crowned Parrots that roost in various locations in Harlingen.

This was an interesting and fun activity.  Looking forward to more complete results.
