different from yesterday

07 Nov

Today the trip I took was called “Where the locals birds”.  Dan Jones and Huck Hutchins led our group.  Only 7 people in the group today.  We went north west of Harlingen to Sol del Rey.  This is an area of salt water.  Not deep, but fairly expansive.  On the way there, we stopped along the way to bird,  we birded all around the salt lake and then birded around the village of Hargil on the way home.  All together we saw 12 species of duck, including Fulvous Whistling Duck. We saw Northern Bobwhite, Wild Turkey, Least Grebe, Pied-billed Grebe and Eared Grebe.  Both cormorants.  Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Snowy Egret and Cattle Egrets were seen in numbers.  Good numbers of White Ibis, White-faced Ibis and Roseate Spoonbill.  Both vultures.  8 species of hawk, including White-tailed Kite, Harris’ Hawk and White-tailed Hawk.  Black-necked Stilt and large numbers of American Avocet.  There were 7 species of sandpipers, including both Wilson’s and Red-necked Phaloropes.  Various doves,  Golden-fronted and Ladder-backed Woodpeckers.  Crested Caracaras, Am Kestrels and a Merlin.  Five flycatchers, including Brown-crested Flycatcher.  Loggerhead Shrike, White-eyed Vireo and Green Jay.  Black-crested Titmouse, Verdin, Bewick’s, House and Cactus Wrens.  Gray Catbird, Curve-billed Thrasher, Long-billed Thrasher and Northern Mockingbird.  4 different Warblers.  4 species or sparrow,  including Vesper.  Northern Cardinal, Pyrrhuloxia and Indigo Bunting.  AND blackbirds!!!

95 species.

It was quite the day.  Not as hot as yesterday and not nearly the number of mosquitoes.  It became a little rainy as the day went on.  The Harlingen Squares Game Show played to a packed house from 6 to 8 pm in the auditorium..  Lots of fun and laughs.  ABA leader, Jeff Gordon was the emcee.  All bird-related questions.

Tomorrow is the last day of the festival.  I am participating in “Shorebird ID” with Kevin Karlson.
