Pontoon Boat Trip on the Rio Grande and birding at Anzalduas County Park

15 Feb

On Saturday, I joined the Arroyo Colorado Audubon Society group for a pontoon boat ride on the Rio Grande.  The boat left from a dock in Mission, Texas at 8:30 am.  A group of us met at Hugh Ramsey World Birding Centre in Harlingen at 7:30 and car-pooled from there to Mission.  It was a terrific day.

Yes…that is my friend, Bob Turner. He rented a place in the RV Park for the month of February and joined the group for the boat trip.

The boat toured up and down the Rio Grande (both sides of the river) for about 2 hours, with Border Patrol boats flying past us once in a while as they kept a look out for any suspicious activity.

After the boat ride, we went over to Anzalduas County Park for more birding.  I saw about 49 species in total, including:

  • Neotropic Cormorant
  • Black Vulture
  • White-tailed Kite
  • Red-shouldered Hawk
  • White-tailed hawk
  • White-tailed Dove
  • Burrowing Owl
  • Green Kingfisher (saw 3 or 4)
  • Black Phoebe (at least 5)
  • Vermillion Flycatcher
  • Couch’s Kingbird
  • Black-crested Titmouse
  • Eastern Bluebird

That is a wonderful picture of the burrowing owl – a classic. Do send me a copy of what you sent to Norma. D
