Backroads travel today

Last year, I did a lot of exploration of the backroads in the vicinity or San Benito and Harlingen.  One of the places I stumbled across was Lake Tia Cano (or something like that).  It is not very far from here.  Maybe 1/2 hour or so.  The lake runs right along the road for a ways.  It is a good place to find ducks, geese, egrets, bitterns, gallinules and coots.  Despite the low temperature and overcast skies, it was good to be there today.  White-fronted Geese, Snow Geese, Six species of dabbling ducks.  Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Cattle Egret.  Black-crowned Night-Herons, Belted Kingfisher. Loggerhead Shrike.  Sharp-shinned Hawk and Cooper’s Hawk.  There were more, but those were the highlights today.  Earlier, in the bird garden, there was a Green Jay and a Black-crested Titmouse.

This evening, since it is Sunday night, most of the park goes to the Rec Hall for ice cream, followed by musical entertainment for an hour.  Tonight, the entertainment was a husband and wife duo from Saskatchewan.  Very entertaining show.

Tomorrow afternoon, I have a meeting scheduled with a couple of people here in the park that are also birders.  We are going to plan some birding activities for the people here in the park.
