the start of a NEW Year list – 2013

02 Jan

On Tuesday, January 1st, I participated in the St. Clair National Wildlife Refuge Christmas Bird Count.  I first started doing this count back in 1989 or 1990 and I have rarely missed a year.  It has to be my favourite count (and generally, I participate in 5 counts every Christmas season)  My partners and I cover the northern part of the count circle.  This takes in the village of Mitchell’s Bay, the Big Point wood lot, the dykes and berms surrounding Big Point, the hunt clubs on Angler drive, and the roads and property down to Heron Drive.  This is a fairly large area.  It involves a lot of walking (and the snow makes this difficult) and a lot of driving.

But doing this count on January 1st is a great way to begin a new year list.  Here is my list from yesterday:

  • Canada Goose
  • Mute Sway
  • Tundra Swan
  • American Black Duck
  • Mallard
  • Great Blue Heron
  • Bald Eagle (6)
  • Northern Harrier (many)
  • Cooper’s Hawk
  • Red-tailed Hawk
  • American Kestrel
  • Peregrine Falcon
  • Sandhill Crane (4 flew by overhead)
  • Herring Gull
  • Great Black-backed Gull
  • Rock Pigeon
  • Mourning Dove
  • Eastern Screech-Owl
  • Belted Kingfisher
  • Red-bellied Woodpecker
  • Downy Woodpecker
  • Northern Shrike
  • Blue Jay
  • American Crow
  • Horned Lark
  • Black-capped Chickadee
  • Red-breasted Nuthatch
  • White-breasted Nuthatch
  • American Robin
  • European Starling
  • American Tree Sparrow
  • Savannah Sparrow
  • Song Sparrow
  • Swamp Sparrow
  • White-crowned Sparrow
  • Dark-eyed Junco
  • Lapland Longspur
  • Snow Bunting
  • Northern Cardinal
  • Red-winged Blackbird
  • Common Grackle
  • Brown-headed Cowbird
  • House Finch
  • Common Redpoll
  • American Goldfinch
  • House Sparrow

Out in Lake St. Clair, we could see that there were lots and lots (1000’s) of ducks, but they were so far out that even with the scope, we were unable to identify them.  And evidently we missed a Snowy Owl that was reported in our area.  (can’t get them all 🙂 🙂 🙂 )  It was simply a great day of birding with my friends Paul Carter and Maris Apse.

It looks like you are off to a great start, too, Dave. In my hasty addition it looks like you had about 45. Nice. 🙂
