Each year the National Audubon Society sponsors and co-ordinates THE GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT. And this year the dates selected for the count are February 17-20th. (That’s next weekend!!!!) Participation in this event is a great way to get involved in an important citizen science project. The information gathered helps ornithologists understand bird population and trends. It is easy and fun. Here are a couple of links to pages on the National Audubon’s website that explains how to participate and provides some background information. This page provides some background information and this page provides the easy steps you can follow in order to participate and explains how to use the interactive maps.
The more people participate, the better the picture. I encourage all of you reading this blog post to join in and provide a good picture of the birds coming to the feeders in our area. It is important to provide the information even if you have a “bad day” at your feeder
